So, today I graduated from college. It’s an odd sensation, I don’t recommend it, very anti-climatic. Despite my graduation, I’ll be at Bowdoin all summer so I’ve got that going for me. Then I’m off to Chicago in the fall. Anyway I’ll be gone for a week, so, instead of not updating the blog, I will not be updating the blog until at least next Monday (this may be a lie).
Other news: Venus = a significant meh. Good acting but, in my opinion, kinda slow/dull.
In Books: Feeling Very Strange: The Slipstream Anthology = a decent short story collection. Unfortunately, it’s kind of uneven (some of the stories are a little too “smart” for my taste) and there is a definite undercurrent of snobbishness throughout the book. Basically, the premise is science fiction (of the magical realism/urban fantasy/weird shit variety) by mainstream authors, who the editors seem to think are far superior to regular SF authors. This is true in some cases (many actually) but in others (see: Wolfe, Gene who is fucking amazing) not so much. Worth a look for a completionist(sp?) or if you’re into some of the authors within, but otherwise go buy one of the renaissance (Space Opera Renaissance, Hard SF Renaissance) books or a Philip K. Dick collection for bad ass short stories.
28 Weeks later is sweet. I don’t know that much else needs to be said. It’s certainly as good as the first one, maybe better (I’d have to watch the first again to refresh my memory). Juan Carlos Fresnadillo certainly knows what he’s doing. A lot of the scenes are super intense, especially the opening sequence in the cabin. So yeah, despite my crappy writing here, go see it.
Also you should check out Fresnadillo’s other movie Intacto, which has the pretty original concept of playing games with luck as the prize (it makes sense in the movie) and features a really bad-ass scene where a bunch of people run through a forest blindfolded, just getting creamed by trees and whatnot.
Finally, two book recommendations: The Last Colony by Joe Scalzi and The Shivered Sky by Matt Dinniman. Scalzi I’ve mentioned before, it’s basically pretty good mil-sf made special by his authorial voice, which I really enjoy. Shivered Sky is Dinniman’s first book and has an interesting look at a war in heaven. It shows a lot of potential, but suffers from some first-book moments and the end leaves a little to be desired. Overall, however, it’s a good read.

At NE Regionals the Clown went 2-2
We got rolled by Brown in the first game. Then we played a great game against BU even coming back to tie after being down 14-11. Unfortunately, we couldn’t pull it out and lost 16-14. After that we crushed Dalhousie and Yale forfeited to us, giving us 13th place. I feel like we could have done better, although we did break seed. We could have beaten BU with a little more luck, as out hucks just weren’t falling, but they were a pretty tough team.
The game of the day was definitely Dartmouth-Williams, as Williams upset Dartmouth 17-15. The last four points were incredible, Williams rallied back with a Callahan and took the win. Apparently, Williams also grabbed the backdoor bid to natties, which is sweet.
With regionals over, I am now done frisbee at Bowdoin. In addition, I’m done my honors project so I’m basically finished college, although I’ll be here till August. It’s kind of odd. I kinda want to party.
Finally, saw both Spiderman 3 and Hot Fuzz this weekend. Hot Fuzz was really funny and awesome. Spiderman was ok, I don’t think it was as bad as a lot of people but it was no where near as good as 2.
Remember: Semper ubi sub ubi
For the first time ever the Clown is going to regionals. Huzzah!
For the results check out the link my my Tumblr. The last two losses were essentially forfeits, we just put someone on the line and intentionally dropped pulls. The reason? Ivies and the massive drinking contained therein.
We played pretty well, (outside of our first game) the toughest game was vs. UMF, who has some great handlers but only 9 players so we basically just used our depth to beat them. Anyway, regionals awaits.
Also I finally finished writing my honors project. I’m one revision away from being finished, thank fucking God.
I saw two movies in the last couple of days:
Last King of Scotland - Pretty great, Forest Whitaker definitely deserved the Oscar.
Notes on a Scandal - A solid and creepy little movie. Again with the good acting.
Finally, if you’re a fan of Sci-fi check out Joe Scalzi. He’s got a fresh style that I’m really enjoying (Old Man’s War and The Android’s Dream if you’re interested).
