Some random crap:
I’m kind of on a westerns kick right now and I watched Seraphim Falls last night. It was pretty good. Liam Neeson, with a band of ne’er-do-wells, is tracking Pierce Brosnan for your standard old revenge killing. The action kicks in early and the whole movie has a pretty cool Blood Meridian/Cormac McCarthy vibe to it (bleak empty landscapes, degenerate mining towns and preachers, an encounter with the devil (played by Angelica Huston, check out the back of her wagon. I almost missed it), that sort of thing) that I was digging. It’s not that terrific or anything but it’s certainly worth a rental, if only for Brosnan and Neeson, especially if you like westerns.
Speaking of westerns, the trailer for the remake of 3:10 to Yuma was just released (you can check it out here) and it looks sweet. Step 1: It has Russel Crowe, who rules. Step 2: It has Christian Bale, who rules as well. Step 3: It has Alan Turdyk (apparently playing a bad ass gunfighter type). Step 4: It’s a remake of one of the greatest westerns ever (same name), which you should do yourself a favor and check out. So yeah, looks like a winner.
Other trailers (just ones I’ve seen recently):
Russel Crowe, with Denzel Washington, pops up again in American Gangster, directed by Ridley Scott. The trailer looks good (then again I almost creamed during the Kingdom of Heaven trailer and that movie sucked) so hopefully it’s a return to form for Scott, who followed the amazing Gladiator with the dreck that was KoH and The Good Year. At the very least it won’t be a fucking romantic comedy.
Invasion with Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman also looks pretty good. Looks to be a Invasion of the Body Snatchers/Heinlein’s Puppet Masters type flick, which could be sweet. Although the lack of Donald Sutherland screaming may hurt things (since he was in both the 70’s Body Snatchers and the 90’s Puppet Masters, I feel that his participation is utterly neccesary in any aliens-taking-over-people’s-bodies scenario).
Another classic Sci-Fi remake is coming in the form of I am Legend, with Will Smith. It could be good, or it could be I, Robot and I’ll be forced to kill someone in the name of Vincent Price.
I’m also digging: the new Bourne movie, the new Harry Potter, and The Kingdom. Also Superbad looks unbelievably awesome (George Michael! not the singer songwriter). Go to the website and check out the rated-R trailer to see what I mean. (areyousuperbad.com)
